A1 Particular about Particulates

Dr Kenichi Sakai, while at Leeds University, has been interested in interfacial adsorption of surfactants and polymers that have wide industrial applications. He has studied adsorption characteristics of stimulus-responsive diblock copolymer micelles at the solid/aqueous solution interface using a variety of techniques including QCM-D to better understand their function. A2 The Hunt for Novel Biomaterials

The world of medical implants is changing and a new class of materials is needed to meet the requirements of a different approach to treatment for a range of conditions. Prof. Joachim Kohn and Dr. Paul Holmes at the New Jersey Center for Biomaterials explain the implications of these changes and how QCM-D is helping to identify the next generation of medical device materials. A3 Publications Review

In this issue we have a bumper harvest of scientific papers. An increasing trend is to use QCM-D as a stand-alone analytic tool to investigate specific aspects of a material surface’s response to film formation. Some examples include: QCM-D as a fast and reliable method for evaluation of biomolecular modifications of any type of colloidal nanoparticles, studying the performance of anti-fouling coatings in marine and bacterial applications and for DNA interactions.   Decade Milestone

Q-Sense AB now moves into its second decade and celebrated its 10th Anniversary with the success of its first world conference behind it. Looking back on the last ten years, Ted Ternander, CEO of the company has commented on the considerable achievements in such a short time. He points out that there are more than “180 installations world-wide with over 250 published papers around QCM-D and this continues to grow at a good pace.”

What this means in practice is that sales in 2006 are 53% higher compared to 2005. Much of this growth has been achieved through the strong relationships Q-Sense has built up with its customers. As Ted Ternander notes, “We benefit from the contribution our customers make. Our vision is to provide new and additional information and our customers’ opinions and thoughts are our inspiration.”

To further build and strengthen our interaction with our customers, we have taken on new staff and are continuing to recruit experienced personnel in a range of roles from marketing to application support. At the beginning of 2007, to manage this growth and to ensure our business focus is maintained, we have implemented a new organizational structure. The company is now organized into four separate departments – Business Development, R&D, Supply and Sales & Marketing. Each of these departments have their own senior managers who will lead and co-ordinate these activities as Q-Sense moves into its next phase of growth.

In the next decade to come, Q-Sense is faced with continuing to strengthen its position in key markets and grow its application base. It is fortunate to be part of the Biolin group which continues to build its portfolio while having a long-term commitment to supporting the companies it owns.
