A1 Nanoscience Goes Large

When science goes to the nanoscale it demands the involvement of many scientific disciplines to understand what is going on. Morten Foss from the Interdisciplinary Nanoscience Centre (iNANO) at the University of Aarhus and Aalborg, Denmark explains what he and his colleagues are doing to progress this new technological field and how QCM-D is involved. A2 The Making of Functional Polymer Architectures

The Institute of Organic Chemistry at the Johannes-Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany are working on developing ways to synthesise new types of functional polymers. Potential novel uses include smart surfaces and as part of drug delivery systems. Patrick Theato discusses the challenges. Read more »

A3 Publications Review

With the number of scientific papers involving QCM-D growing dramatically, we are becoming spoilt for choice. This issues batch have a strong emphasis on nanoscience and include an integrated view on the formation of solid-supported lipid bilayers and monitoring the kinetics of surface initiated atom transfer radical polymerization by quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation.   Building the Dream

Q-Sense has now completed the first phase of its expansion into the US with four new staff in place and keen to build further the established operations in a key market. QNews has an interview with two new staff members who talk about their hopes for the future in article 4. They join at a time when our latest E4 continues to surge in sales and has exceeded all our expectations last year.

In August, our parent company, Biolin showed its commitment to developments in our scientific field by acquiring CoAT, a long-standing development partner and supplier to Q-Sense. Read more in article 4.

These truly are heady days in the world of Q-Sense. Plus we will run our first ever World Conference, which is planned as a two-day event starting on 1st December, 2006, at the Fairmont Copley Plaza in the centre of Boston. It will be a rare opportunity to meet some of the most seasoned users of QCM-D who will speak on different aspects of biointerface characterization and nanotechnology using QCM-D, sometimes in combination with other technologies. Check out our website for the full conference programme and details of how to book your place.

In the comparatively tranquil world of QNews, we are also undergoing our own quiet revolution as we move entirely to paperless production starting with this issue. We feel that this will allow us to develop a more flexible content in the future.
