QCM-D studies of cells/bacteria is a young but promising application area:

• Cellular adhesion can be monitored in real time. QCM-D is most sensitive to events that happen close to the surface, being particularly sensitive to the cell’s adhesion sites
• Biofilm formation or cell adhesion can be detected at a very early stage
• It offers the possibility to employ various purpose-designed coatings, creating the opportunity to screen different surfaces for cell adhesion and/or biofilm formation.
